Climate Action
- Samsung Biologics recognizes the urgency and seriousness of the climate crisis. To address this challenge strategically, we have established climate governance and are implementing systematic environmental management. We focus on managing natural capital and reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout our value chain. Through these efforts, we aim to turn climate challenges into opportunities and support a sustainable future for generations to come.

- Reduce
-
- Reducing office power consumption and HVAC use through employee involvement (Discovering ways to save energy at business sites by gathering employees’ ideas via an annual contest)
- Striving to transition to low-carbon site operations by maximizing energy efficiency through measurement of energy use per plant/process
- Deriving permanent reduction effects by actively incorporating eco-friendly technologies and low-emission technologies into the infrastructure
- Switching to high-efficiency boilers that emit less air pollutants when burning
- Replace
-
- Promoting energy source conversion and GHG emission reduction through the gradual introduction of electric/hydrogen boilers after achieving the mid-term goal for 2030
- Reducing the annual consumption of LNG by using high-efficiency heat from external hot water instead
- Expanding internal solar power generation on business sites by 2030
- Promoting gradual transition of company fleets to eco-friendly vehicles
- Purchase
-
- Taking internal reduction and replacement measures first and then purchasing renewable energy, considering estimates on the country’s rate of transition to renewable energy
- Purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC); signing direct Power Purchase Agreements (PPA); participating in the Green Premium system

- Key Suppliers
-
- We focus on reducing GHG emissions of key suppliers that significantly impact Samsung Biologics’ Scope 3 emissions (about 80%) at earlier stages.
- Considering that some suppliers have already established Net Zero targets, we monitor the achievement progress of these targets based on their pre-established goals, focusing on activities aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Small / Large Suppliers
-
- We encourage global client suppliers to set Net Zero targets and take action.
- Through training, the measurement or disclosure of emissions, and target setting, we will make full-scale efforts after establishing a Net Zero and GHG reduction environment in 2040.
- Others
-
- We are replacing the vehicles of logistics partners with zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) and requesting them to set and implement RE100 targets.
- In addition to the supply chain, by 2050 we will reduce waste and other Scope 3 emissions by 10%.
Transitioning to Renewable Energy (RE100)
Samsung Biologics understands the importance of renewable energy and uses it to reduce environmental impact, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support a sustainable future. In November 2022, we joined RE100 and set a goal to power 100% of our electricity needs with renewable energy by 2050.
Renewable Energy Target (%)
- 32% by 2030
- 62% by 2034
- 70% by 2040
- 100% by 2050
Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)
We offer our clients comprehensive Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) assessments, measuring greenhouse gas emissions across the lifecycle of their product—from supply chain sourcing through to our own manufacturing sites. Using these insights, we collaborate with clients to identify reduction opportunities and support them in lowering their overall emissions.
