As fusion proteins are prone to fragmentation, they are more likely to aggregate than monoclonal antibodies. This ultimately leads to unwanted entrapment of proteins in the cell’s Golgi apparatus, preventing secretion of naturally folded proteins and causing premature degradation. Therefore, efforts to raise titer have proven to be counterproductive, as they simultaneously compromise purity of the API. As a means to directly address this challenge, the DSP team has established their working system for removing impurities from extracted proteins. Initial steps of the procedure are facilitated through in silico analyses of different physico-chemical properties, which help to efficiently select more favorable resins from an established library. To address host cell proteins (HCPs) – one example of process-related impurities – the DSP team works side-by-side with the Analytical team, utilizing their capabilities in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to track HCPs down to their specific types while screening for various types of chromatography resins.The CLD and process development (PD) teams as one collaborative entity have been consistent in their approach to on-time communication with clients. The teams make use of a comprehensive in-house analytical capability, with methods encompassing charge to size variants and customized to the molecule. They evaluate quality for samples during process development and for drug substance or product, various attributes and molecular stability being assessed through state-of-the-art analytical methods such as rigorous MS spectrometry, which confirms relationship with potency. “The client may feel more at ease about various glycan variants if it is confirmed that glycosylation does not interfere with the molecule’s potency, and this will have impact on establishing specifications,” said Yoonsik Kim, a senior scientist in Analytical Development. This year, the campaign theme of International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity – highlighting that equality isn’t enough of a level playing field, and that there is a need to push for equity. While equality means that everyone is given the same opportunities, equity realizes that everyone has a different start and allocates resources and opportunities for an equal outcome. In this article, female leaders and colleagues at Samsung Biologics share their insight on what equity means to them and how they are supporting a positive change. What does equity mean to you? Have you had a chance to think about equity in your life? Christina Kim: Equity for me is acknowledging and embracing the value of what one individual can bring as who she or he is regardless of ethnic, social, educational background and their appearances. This applies to any setting including work, family, community, country, etc. You get the idea. I often think about my equity and how I can use it to voice and present different perspectives. More importantly, I try to see the same in others and close any gaps and biases I might have due to our differences. Our equity cannot be measured as low versus high, but as differences because we all are unique on our own. Min Hong: When I was in charge of BWC (Bio Women's Club) in Samsung Biologics last year, I learned the difference between 'equality' and 'equity' by looking for data related to diversity, equality, and respect. "Equality" refers to equal access to resources and opportunities, but "equity" refers to receiving resources and opportunities according to different situations. I think "equality" in our society should go in the direction of "equity" as a result. Arushi Narang: I interpret equity as the equality of opportunity to access (education, healthcare, earning to live life with dignity, etc.) for everyone. The bias is unconscious and ingrained. I try to work around the biases – especially when working in multicultural teams across geographies. What do you think of social issues on equity (healthcare, gender, education, etc.)? Arushi Narang: Our society pays a gigantic toll for the inequity. A McKinsey analysis showed that my native country India will lose $3 trillion in GDP in 2025 due to gender inequity. There's no calculating the toll of other injustices - based on religion, disabilities, race, sexual orientation. Continuous efforts are being made to promote the value of diversity, but inequity still exists throughout society. In particular, ‘equity’ and ‘equality’ are words that can be interpreted in a different way so I think it is crucial to come to a social consensus. Min Hong: Compared to the past, more people nowadays sympathize social imbalances and try to solve the problem. However, as these issues are difficult to solve individually, society as a whole needs to embrace different colors and move away from black and white thinking. Christina Kim: We also need to ask ourselves if we have been using the same society-set “equity” standards to ourselves and those around us. In the earlier part of my career, I tried very hard to be “equal match” to all other white, male, older colleagues at work. Sooner or later, I realized, the more I strived to be the same, the more frustrated I got. I started to present what I considered as disadvantages (women, youngest leadership member, and Asian-American) as strengths. It is liberating to be who you are and I believe that it is the only pathway to reach your optimal potential. What can we do to make 'fair society' or 'equal society'? What are your job responsibilities at Samsung Biologics?I’m responsible for leading two process improvement projects that integrate all of the different cross-functional groups within Samsung Biologics. What does process improvement mean in the biopharmaceutical industry?Process improvement, for me, is an assessment of where we currently are, how our business processes are set up, how our quality processes are set up, and figuring out a way to make both of those better in order to ensure that we can manufacture for our clients with speed and quality. Process improvements in the biopharma sector are very tricky because we have to ensure that we’re building agility into our processes, while maintaining quality for the fact of patient safety. If we have slow, inefficient processes, then our patients are impacted because we can’t manufacture product faster. If we compromise on quality as a result of business process improvement, then now we’re risking patient safety. So one of the big things that I focus on at Samsung Biologics is ensuring we balance those two, faster and better. How does this ultimately impact our clients?Building business processes that are more efficient and have quality impact our clients because by doing so, we’re able to take on more capacity. From an agility perspective, we’re able to manufacture for a more diverse population of clients, and a result, more patients. If we don’t have quality processes in place, then our clients are directly impacted because now, we’re going to be slowed down if we have to investigate those events. How does data integrity and modernizing quality management go hand in hand?In order to build a mature quality system, we need to have mature data integrity integrated into our systems. We can use the data that we’re generating electronically to make predictive analytics and to look at the data proactively instead of reactively, and by doing so we can help support our clients better…Everything we do at Samsung Biologics is really for ensuring that our clients are satisfied. What makes Samsung Biologics’ culture unique?I think one of the unique aspects of Samsung Biologics’ culture is there’s a sense of collective pride across management and employees. The principle of immunization through vaccination was the initial mechanism that was employed for the first-ever biomedicine. For many centuries, smallpox devastated mankind. In the 18th century, Edward Jenner, an English physician and scientist, took interest in the protective effects of cowpox. He had found that dairymaids were protected from smallpox naturally after having suffered from cowpox. Based on this, Jenner had concluded that cowpox not only protected people against smallpox, but also that it could be transmitted from one person to another as an intentional mechanism of protection. Through this research, he pioneered the concept of vaccines and demonstrated the first-ever scientific attempt to control an infectious disease through vaccination. In the 19th century, Pasteur developed the overall principle of vaccines and further contributed to the foundation of immunology. He developed the vaccine for anthrax by attenuating the virus in rabbits and subsequently harvesting it from their spinal cords. We started to build these small reactors to meet their needs,” Kim said.
