Samsung Biologics obtains Zero Waste to Landfill certification
Samsung Biologics has acquired the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) certification from Underwriters Laboratories. ZWTL is a waste diversion validation program that evaluates and grants designations for landfill waste diversion rates at organizations.
In 2023, Samsung Biologics recorded a landfill waste diversion rate of 85.4% and obtained ZWTL certification for its Songdo, Incheon site. The designations are divided into Platinum (100%), Gold (99-95%), Silver (94-90%), and Certified (over 80%). Although it can be relatively difficult to circulate waste in the biopharmaceutical industry because raw materials such as medical waste must be incinerated and small quantities of materials are frequently used, Samsung Biologics has managed general versus designated waste through its Green Center.
This year, its waste recycling rate increased through more effective waste discharge from clean rooms. Synthetic resin waste and organic solvent waste were separately collected. Synthetic resin waste, which had originally been incinerated, was recycled and the treatment of bonded plastic containers was upgraded.
"Samsung Biologics has acquired the first ZWTL certification in Korea by establishing a top-tier waste management system," said Segang Park, Vice President and Senior Director of the Safety, Health & Environment Team. "We will continue to strengthen our waste management and acquire higher ZWTL designations." To increase employees’ interest and understanding of waste management, Samsung Biologics conducts training at the Green Center for new hires and runs group activities such as a waste cycle quiz.
