We believe every life has value—no matter the age, ability, beliefs, and identity—and strive to create an environment where all employees can thrive. This International Women's Day, we're proud to #InspireInclusion in everything that we do.

Across our company, from our manufacturing center floors to the board room, we're making progress in our Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, and are committed to fostering respect and opportunity for growth. By making everyone feel included, we're able to build a workplace that puts people first.

What does #InspireInclusion mean to you?

Miyoung Park

I believe that the essence of inclusion lies in fostering understanding. It requires an attitude of openness to embrace diverse thoughts and perspectives, coupled with a sincere effort to comprehend these differences. I believe that it's crucial to cultivate an environment where opinions can be expressed without bias as well as respected. At its core, this entails establishing a sense of safety and belonging where individuals feel accepted regardless of their viewpoints.

As team leader, my focus is on fostering an environment where people can discuss and accept differences through constructive dialogue and agreement. While we may not always agree on every opinion, encouraging open communication allows us to share thoughts and perspectives effectively.

Yongah Kim

For me, #InspireInclusion embodies synergy, leveraging diverse strengths and backgrounds to foster collaboration and mutual support. Embracing individual differences cultivates a dynamic environment where collaboration thrives, transforming diversity into a powerful catalyst for innovation.

Why do you think inclusion is important, especially in the science/biopharma sector?

Yongah Kim

Biology, at its core, thrives on diversity, making it essential for individuals from various perspectives to contribute to the field. Companies with diverse and equitable representation across genders tend to excel in innovation and productivity. This trend is reflected in the increasing proportion of female scientists within the scientific community, including in fields like CDO, where I'm currently working at. With this growing diversity, I anticipate a wave of new innovations that will propel the field of biology forward in the coming years.

Miyoung Park

In the biopharma industry, inclusion is vital as it often leads to life-saving breakthroughs. Embracing diverse perspectives, especially from women, enhances our ability to explore new treatment modalities, ultimately saving more lives.

How do you foster inclusion and create a workplace culture that empowers women in Samsung Biologics?

Miyoung Park

At Samsung Biologics, 41% of our workforce is comprised of women, with female leadership representing 27% of this demographic. Our company actively implements various systems like flexible work-hour policy to facilitate a balance between work and family, fostering an environment where women can actively engage in career development.

Moreover, the company encourages us to diversify our expertise through selective job rotations. Personally, I transitioned from Quality Control (QC) to a business-related department, and later returned to QC. This opportunity allowed me to broaden my skillset and gain valuable experience across different functions.

Yongah Kim

At Samsung Biologics, we are fostering inclusion not only in regards to gender, but also in how we support employees from different cultural backgrounds. Recently, two expats joined our team and we made it a priority to broaden our communication methods to ensure that they felt included and supported. It's evident that without a culture of inclusion at the department level, individuals, regardless of their expertise, may struggle to fully showcase their capabilities.

How can you inspire inclusion?

Yongah Kim

As a junior scientist, I believe that the diverse perspectives shared by my female colleagues and leaders enrich my understanding and ultimately contribute to a more innovative work environment. Inclusion not only enhances our work, but also promotes a happier workplace for all. By respecting others, and myself, I aim to uncover new possibilities and foster a culture of collaboration and growth.

Miyoung Park

As a mentor, colleague, and leader, my aspiration is to inspire others to share their ideas at any time. Embracing each individual’s unique qualities, I’m committed to fostering an environment of open-minded dialogue. This mindset truly serves as the catalyst for exploring small possibilities, essential for fostering innovation and progress. Through this transparent communication, I try to cultivate a workplace culture where every female voice is heard and respected, thereby propelling us towards collective success and advancement.
