Driven. For Climate Action.
As a sustainable CDMO partner, we are driven to reduce our environmental footprint and recognize that our employees are the most important resource in advancing innovation and progress in sustainability. For Jimin Han, the Director of the Business Continuity Management Group that manages company-wide operational risk management and climate change strategy and implementation, moving from climate pledge to climate progress is vital for the health of planet and people. In this interview, hear how Samsung Biologics is committed to climate action and what Jimin believes individuals can do to lead a more sustainable life.
How are we progressing towards zero environmental impact?
With sustainability as one of our core values, we are leveraging our full power to drive climate action and quickly operationalize carbon-reducing initiatives across our entire business. To achieve this, we are finding opportunities internally to reduce emissions in our operations and supply chains as well as implementing eco-friendly infrastructure as we expand.
As a member and sole CDMO representative in HRH The Prince of Wales’ Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Health Systems Taskforce, we are working with global biopharmaceutical companies, international institutions, healthcare systems, and policymakers to accelerate the delivery of net-zero healthcare through supply chain decarbonization.
Why has decarbonization become so important to the biopharma industry?
Right now, with global temperatures rising, the climate crisis is not only an environmental emergency, but it also has the potential to have a substantial impact on public health. With the healthcare sector contributing to 4-5% of greenhouse gas emissions per year, it’s imperative for the biopharma industry to reduce its carbon emissions and move to net zero.
On this World Environment Day, we’re reminded that collective, transformative action is imperative to reducing our carbon footprint. What advice can you give to people who want to do more for the environment?
Climate change can seem like such an enormous problem that individual actions would have little impact, but there are actually things you can do every day to reduce your personal contribution to a warming planet. Reducing energy consumption, even though it may seem straightforward, can have a substantial impact in the long-term. At Samsung Biologics, we’re hoping that as we make the transition to 100% renewable energy, we can encourage our employees to adopt some of these measures in their own homes and lifestyles. It’s always good to do something rather than nothing.
What does “sustainability” and “climate action” mean to you?
From a business standpoint, I think both are an essential requirement that a company must take on for sustainable growth. In the past, companies didn’t include sustainability as part of their business foundation, but now climate risk has become a public health risk and it is necessary for a company to set sustainable targets and goals to not only drive a healthier future, but also as a good business ethos towards achieving resilient, long-term growth.
What are you driven for?
Advancing, incorporating, and advocating for sustainable business practices is what moves me forward and gives me the hope that we’re making a difference. It’s about our future growth, and how we can build a healthier tomorrow for the planet and people.
Samsung Biologics celebrates the unique qualities, perspectives, and experiences that define us as individuals. Whether you're a hard-worker, smart thinker, dreamer or doer, we share one goal at Samsung Biologics: we are all driven for life. In this spotlight series, learn more about our diverse colleagues and the life-changing work they do.
